Editing

If video making is the vessel of media than Editing is the heart of that vessel which bring life to it. Editing can be genre specific or common used in all genre, it can restrict genres but genres cant restrict it, Editing is the key to continuity, without editing media text would be unimpressive , clobbered to the ground , lacking simple proportions and will look out of proportion.

Straight Cut

One of the most commonly used Editing is in any media genre is Straight cut. The majority of shots in a moving image text will be assembled using straight cuts. This is simply where one shot replaces the next. Straight cuts construct a linear narrative and aid continuity.

The above scene of EVIL DEAD RISE has mostly straight cut in it , it follows one scene after another for example as the monster was eating the glass a female approached it it was than followed by another scene of the monster turning an so on , this not only creates smoothness in the text but also continuity.

SHOT/REVERSE SHOT

This editing technique is predominantly used to show characters conversing. The aim is to show their reactions whilst simultaneously involving the audience in their conversation. The shots are typically over the shoulder shots. The editor will assemble shots that have been taken from a two-camera set-up that adheres to the 180 degree rule

in the above scene of dinner we can see a crash out of the mother while also turning towards other characters facial expression this was achieved by shot/reverse shot editing in which the keep changing the person in frame in between the conversation so the viewers can see and understand the facial expression of the characters involved.

EYE LINE SHOT

An eye line match is used to provide the audience with narrative information and ensure continuity. It shows the audience what the character is looking at, which is usually off screen.

Danny rides his tricycle down the hallway, looks ahead → eyeline match to the twin girls standing silently, Danny experience Sudden terror after long, quiet buildup Creating a shock reveal through perspective — we experience the horror exactly when Danny does. This was one of the example effect and purpose of eye line shot as it help us connect with charcter like Danny

JUMP CUTS

Who can forget the editing cuts which makes up half of the identity of horror genre, which gives existence to one of the most promising convention of horror genre, JUMP SCARE, by jump cuts

in the scene above , the girl was looking around and than a sudden jump cut to the mirror to create the jump scare in which the nun appear in the jump and screams, this sudden break of silence with a chaotic and horrifying screech and unexpected horror visual which may or may not threaten the character's live in the story creates a sudden shock and fear at the same time in the mind of audience along with also the anxiety of what will happen to the
character.

SHORT SHOT DURATION

A short shot duration is used to inject pace into the scene which either emphasize a phycological breakdown or add thrills to the scene

The zombie chase scene was fast paced in above scene , why? because this helped induce tension, anxiety and horror , questions start to arise , will the survivors make it ? This type of pacing thrives upon adrenaline so by injecting a speedy high stake scene they exploit the audience adrenaline to help induce thrills.

LONGER SHOT DURATION

used to signify drama or emotion. Longer durations enable the audience to identify and emotionally connect with characters. This pace help the audience see and understand the current scenario on a greater scale as it have slower change rate so the mind have more time to perform analysis and connect to the scene, It also help induce anxiety as to what will happen , unlike in short shot duration where answer are given even before they are asked the longer shot duration forces the mind to actively question the impending scene.

from 0:55 to 1:22 we can see a longer shot duration , as the crooked man follows the young boy the scene turns slow motion and slow paced to create anxiety and deeper connectivity to the boy being chased.
